Integration of Digital Technology for effective STEM Education among Conflict zones in Northern Nigeria

Abstract

STEM education in Nigeria's conflict-affected regions, where insecurity from groups like Boko Haram and banditry has led to school closures, infrastructure destruction, and displacement. These factors have significantly reduced enrollment in STEM subjects, despite their critical role in Nigeria’s economic growth, technological advancement, and global competitiveness. The focus is on the potential of digital tools and online platforms, such as Moodle, Google Classroom, and mobile learning apps, to maintain quality education in these areas. These tools offer flexibility, access to global knowledge, and opportunities for personalized learning. Virtual labs and simulations can further enable STEM education despite the lack of physical resources. However, the implementation of technology faces challenges, including limited infrastructure, poor internet connectivity, and lack of digital literacy. Cultural resistance to technology, especially in rural areas, and safety concerns like cyber threats add to the complexity. To overcome these challenges, the abstract highlights the need for infrastructure investment, such as improved internet access, affordable devices, and electricity solutions. It also stresses the importance of community engagement to ensure cultural relevance and acceptance of technology, as well as mobile-first solutions for areas with weak internet access. Finally, ongoing support and professional development for teachers and students are essential to ensure the successful integration of technology in these regions.
