Abstract

Abstract This study examined the influence of recreational and instructional spaces planning on job performance among government secondary school teachers in Delta State, Nigeria. Two research questions were raised and two research hypotheses formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population of this study comprised of 14,877 teachers including principals from all the 493 government secondary schools in Delta State, Nigeria. Simple random sampling procedure was adopted in determining the sample size of 43 schools and 744 teachers. Questionnaire titled “Influence of recreational and instructional spaces planning on Teachers’ Job Performance” (QIRIPTJP) was used for data collection. The instrument with 10 items was validated by expert and a pilot study conducted which yielded a validity index and coefficient of 0.79 and 0.82 respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean and standard deviation to answer research questions and chi-square to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that recreational and instructional spaces planning has significant influence on teachers’ job performance Based on the findings of this study it was recommended that Delta State Government through the State Ministry of Education should engage educational planners to handle the planning of recreational and instructional spaces in government secondary schools and also provide adequate fund to build adequate recreational and instructional facilities to enhance teachers’ job performance in government secondary schools in Delta State, Nigeria.
