Qualitative Study on Harnessing Language and literature Studies for Sustainable National Development in Nigeria: A Strategic Approach

Abstract

This paper explores how language and literature contribute immensely to the unity and national development of a country with special emphasis on Nigeria. It examines the ways in which language and literature can be harnessed to promote cultural identity, social cohesion and economic development. The paper also examines the contribution of language and literature in individual development, moral development, national integration and unity, commerce, science and technology, communication and cultural development which are agents of national development. By analyzing the intersections between language, literature and national development, it provides insights into the potential of language and literature to contribute to sustainable growth and national prosperity. The paper reveals that language is a very important instrument in national development and its development could rapidly develop a nation. Government should develop and implement inclusive language policies that will promote multilingualism and language diversity. There is need to support programmes that promote the use of language in education, media and government to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage and tradition and enhance communication among diverse communities. Therefore indigenous languages should be integrated into formal education. Also, there is need to translate laws and key political texts into indigenous languages so that indigenous peoples may participate in political and legal fields.
