Correlation between Green Chemistry Awareness, Entrepreneurial Skills and Sustainability Literacy on Innovation Intention among Colleges of Education Pre-Service Teachers in Niger State, Nigeria

Abstract

This research investigated into the role of green chemistry awareness, entrepreneurial skills, and sustainability literacy as predictors of innovation intention of pre-service teachers in Niger State, Nigeria. This study was carried out using a descriptive correlational survey design. The population of the study was final year chemistry education students in the teacher education institutions in Niger State. A total of 240 pre-service chemistry teachers were randomly sampled from the population using the simple random sampling technique at Dr. Umaru Sanda Ahmadu College of Education, Minna and Federal College of Education, Kontagora. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire titled Green Chemistry Awareness, Entrepreneurial Skills, Sustainability Literacy and Innovation Intentions Questionnaire (GCAESLIIQ). This instrument was face validated by experts in chemistry education, entrepreneurship education and measurement and evaluation. The instrument was also pilot tested on 30 chemistry education students at Federal College of Education, Zuba, Abuja. Cronbach's Alpha coefficients obtained were 0.82, 0.85, 0.80 and 0.84 for green chemistry awareness, entrepreneurial skills, sustainability literacy and innovation intentions respectively. The overall reliability coefficient was 0.83. Data collected was analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and multiple regression at 0.05 level of significance. From the study, it was observed that green chemistry awareness, entrepreneurial skills and sustainability literacy have a significant positive relationship with innovation intention of pre-service teachers in Niger State. These variables also accounted significantly to innovation intentions of the pre-service teachers with entrepreneurial skill being the best predictor of the innovation intentions. The study concluded that efforts should be made to enhance sustainability education and entrepreneurial skills of pre-service chemistry teachers to boost their innovation intentions and achieve sustainable development of the country.
