Effects of Virtual-Field-Trip and Field-Experience Strategies on Performance in Air Pollution among College of Education Students in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated the effects of virtual-field-trip and field-experience strategies on performance in air pollution among college of education students in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Two research questions and hypotheses guided the study. Quasi experimental pretest, post-test design with two groups was adopted for the study. The population comprised 261-year one Integrated Science and Biology students, taking the course ISC 114: Component of the Environment 1, (99 males and 162 females) in Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit. Multistage sampling technique was used to select 102 students for the study. The students were assigned into two groups. Group one had 53 students (15 males and 38 females) taught with Virtual field trip, while Group two, had 49 students (20 males and 29 females) taught with field experience. The instrument for data collection was the Field Trip Performance Test (FTPT) with a reliability coefficient of 0.80 and the data collected were analysed. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation, while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Results showed that, there was significant effects of instructional strategies on the performance of the students taught using virtual field trip over those taught with conventional field experience. There was no significant effect of gender on academic performance. It was recommended among others that innovative teaching strategies that will engender interest and creativity in the students should be encouraged for teaching Pre-service teachers.
