Correlation Between Leadership Style and Retention Rate among Secondary School Students in Kisinga Town Council of Kasese District, Uganda

The retention of students in secondary schools can be greatly influenced by head teachers’ management styles. The key role of head teachers in schools is to ensure all students complete their studies as scheduled, thereby maintaining a high student retention rate. However, the retention rate is low, and this has been exacerbated by high dropouts. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to examine the influence of head teachers’ management styles and student retention in secondary schools in Kisinga Town Council, Kasese District, Uganda. This was guided by the following objective: to examine the relationship between democratic leadership style and retention of students. students in secondary in Kisinga town council, Kasese District. The study was anchored on Student integration theory and guided by a conceptual framework. Moreover, the study employed a correlational research design and a quantitative research approach. The target population was 3306, and a sample of 294 respondents. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select respondents for the study. The data was collected using a self-developed questionnaire, which was subjected to reliability and validity tests. The data was analyzed by use of multiple regression analysis with the help of SPSS version 24. All assumptions of regression analysis were tested, and the study was conducted by considering the ethical issues. Findings from the democratic leadership style revealed an overall mean of 3.485 with an SD of 1.106, and statistically significant in influencing the retention of students. Finally, the recommendations were also made at the end.
