Abstract

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is essential for developing skilled manpower needed for technological and industrial advancement, yet students’ achievement and motivation in Building Drawing Among Colleges of Education in Kano State, Nigeria, remain persistently low. This study investigated the effect of Experiential Learning on students’ academic achievement and motivation in Building Drawing. The study was guided by two research questions and two null hypotheses. A quasi-experimental design involving pre-test, post-test, and post-post-test non-equivalent control groups was adopted. The population consisted of 87 NCE III Building Technology students, while 62 students were cluster sampled. The Building Drawing Academic Achievement Test (BDAAT) and Building Drawing Motivation Questionnaire (BDMQ) were used for data collection. The instruments were validated by experts and yielded reliability coefficients of 0.810 using Cronbach's alpha and 0.851 using PPMC. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation, while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that students taught using Experiential Learning had higher mean academic achievement and motivation level than those taught using the lecture method. ANCOVA results showed a significant difference in academic achievement in favor of the experiential learning group (F = 31.061, p = .000, η² = 0.345). Similarly, a significant difference was found in motivation level in favor of the experiential learning group, the test yielded Mann–Whitney U value of 373.000, Z value of -1.500 and significance value of .134. The study concluded that Experiential Learning is more effective than the lecture method in improving students’ academic achievement and motivation in Building Drawing. It was recommended that lecturers adopt experiential learning strategies and that institutions provide adequate instructional resources and training to support effective implementation.
