Validation of Cognitive Engagement Questionnaire among University Pre-Service Biology Teachers in Northwest, Nigeria

Abstract

The study aims at validating Cognitive Engagement Questionnaire among Pre-service Biology Teachers of Universities in North-west zone, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted on the population comprising of level 300 biology education students of the university program in the state universities in north-west zone, Nigeria. A Sample of thirty (30) pre-service biology teachers were selected using multistage sampling technique from two (2) universities in the zone. Face, content, construct validity and reliability were carried out and the result produced a significant values of logical face validity index (82.5%), overall content validity or Scale Validity Index (0.88), Convergent validity index (r = 0.83), Divergent validity index (r = 0.23), Reliability coefficient (r = 0.88). The reliability indices of the subscales recorded as; Cognitive Strategy (0.98), Deep Processing (0.92), Shallow Processing (0.88), and Persistence (0.80).The study concluded that the instrument is clear, relevant, suitable instrument is fit for measuring the intended psychological constructs of pre-service biology teachers’ cognitive engagement, and further suggested that, Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC) to adopt the PREBITCEQ as a standardized measuring instrument for monitoring the cognitive engagement of pre-service biology teachers across the universities in North-west zone Nigeria.
